2006/7 Pay Settlement

Dear members

You will recall that we wrote to all of you earlier this month, explaining the UDW’s position in respect of the company’s offer for increasing pay and allowances over the next 3 years. We advised you that the UDW would claim their legitimate rights to be consulted over changes that affect our members. We are now able to inform you that this has been accepted by the company.

We have now had formal talks with the company and have asked for clarity over all aspects of their offer. More importantly, we secured an assurance that the pay rises were not conditional upon the company target of 30% permanent to 70% self-employed drivers.

As a direct result of our deliberations with the company, you will shortly receive a copy of a letter from DHL management sent to the Vauxhall site UDW members, setting out the pay offer in detail. This is a remarkable achievement in that it marks an unprecented move from the company towards transparency in the communication of the pay offer. It also evidence that the company have listened to their staff and have responded positively to the representations of the UDW.

The offer will affect different members in different ways. Increases to basic pay will range from 7.7% to 19.2% over the 3 year period. These increases will include the parcel allowance and Christmas bonuses. However, by the end of the 3 year period, Parcel Express employees will have a pay system in line with their colleagues in the international business.

The UDW was also assured categorically that there would be no compulsory redundancies; any staff reductions would be achieved through natural wastage and voluntary redundancy.

The UDW believe that this year’s pay talks have gone on for far too long. All employees, our members, are not prepared to wait any longer to receive a pay rise that was due in April, 2006. The UDW have expressed this in the strongest terms to the company and have made it known that we will be consulting with our members over the offer.

The UDW is acutely aware that more than 50% of DHL Express staff do not belong to a trade union and as such, have no voice in the discussions about pay. We ask that you do all you can to encourage these staff to join the UDW in order to make their views known.

You will shortly receive details of the process for consultation and ballot on the pay offer. In the meantime, please feel free to contact your local UDW representative, who will be happy to advise you.

The UDW National Executive.
