Value
for money for members |
We
are committed to creating a new union which has openness,
honesty and integrity at its core. We want to develop modern
ways of working with DHL managers which are in the best interests
of DHL workers. This means a shift away from the old ways
of established trade unionism which, sadly, often resulted
in disappointment and anger rather than positive outcomes.
We aim to create a union which is strongly independent but
which enhances the working lives of DHL workers through credible,
value-for-money, representation.
We
aim to firmly focus on our ‘core-business’ of
top-quality representation for DHL workers.
Our
first 6 months
We
came into being in June 2005 and so have now clocked up just
over 6 months. In that time, we have:
 |
Secured
certification - which means we are a bona fide trade union.
|
 |
Elected
over 30 representatives - these are increasing with the
steady growth in membership. |
 |
Appointed
a full-time official - Jim McEwan. |
 |
Established
a central office based in Berkshire. |
 |
Developed
positive relationships with DHL managers and directors. |
This
is tremendous progress in what can only be described as a
ground-breaking initiative in the interests of the people
who work for DHL.
UDW
Structure
The
UDW is led by a National Secretary with a National President.
We have a full-time official serving 30 representatives who
are aligned to particular sites.
The
union ‘executive’ is organised on an area basis,
with the following area representatives heading up the regions:
Support
for Representatives
We
recognise how important it is for representatives to feel
well supported. Through this, we will ensure a top-quality
service to members. We aim to achieve this through:
 |
Strong
central support from both the National Secretary and full-time
Official. |
 |
Additional,
localised support from the area representatives. |
 |
Establishing
a comprehensive training and development programme for
representatives. |
 |
Access
to professional legal advice. |
DHL
Pay 2006/7
The
UDW has noted that there was some disappointment with this
year’s pay increase (2005/6), which was settled at 3%
and negotiated by the current members of the UDW Executive
(see above) before their departure from an old trade union.
In 2005/6, employment trend data shows that the average settlement
in the transport industry was settled at below this figure.
This is reflective of low inflation rates and low or no profits
being made in the industry.
In
the interests of fairness, we would like to give due recognition
to the achievement of the individuals who secured what turns
out to have been a very respectable settlement. We are pleased
to now have these individuals as part of the UDW Executive
team, following their decision to leave an old trade union.
The
UDW will submit evidence and a case for consideration by DHL
management in respect of this coming year’s settlement
(2006/7). We will consult fully with DHL workers on any offers
from the company and ensure that our views are put forward
to the DHL management team.
The
Future
We
are committed to:
….until
next time…..
It
has been an eventful first 6 months. It has been a challenging
and exciting time for the UDW and a privilege to work with
all of you in our new venture. We look forward to continuing
a positive relationship with all DHL workers.
Here’s
to the next 6 months!
